How to Shuffle Cards Like a Pro

Family of 2 adults and 3 kids playing a card game where everyone is holding cards in their hands.

Want to look impressive and stand out? Learning how to shuffle cards like a pro can do just that.

Whether you are showing off to your friends or playing a simple card game, you should know how to shuffle a deck of cards. There are multiple ways to shuffle a deck of cards, but the riffle method is the best. Follow these 3 easy steps to show off your riffle shuffling skills:

Step 1: Hold the Deck and Split the Cards

The first step when learning how to shuffle a deck of cards is to hold the deck with your thumb on one end with your pinky, ring, and middle finger on the other end. Your index finger should be curled in the middle of the deck of cards. If you are right-handed, hold the deck in your right hand, and if you are left-handed, hold it in your left hand.

Next, you are going to split the cards in half. Push down with your index finger so the cards begin to bend. Run your thumb up the cards, and use your non-dominant hand to catch them.

Once you have split the deck equally in half, separate the piles and hold the second deck in your other hand – the same way as the first. You are now one step closer to learning how to shuffle cards like a pro.

      Step 2: Bend and Shuffle

Next, hold the piles about an inch apart and bend them towards the table. Just like in step one, your index finger should be pressing into the middle of the back of the deck. Let the cards go by moving your thumb up the deck, allowing the cards to fall and overlap.

Try to release the cards one by one so they interlace on top of each other. This is the most important step when learning how to shuffle cards.

      Step 3: The Bridge

This step is strictly to teach you how to shuffle cards like a pro. After shuffling the cards, they should be interlaced about halfway down the cards. Grab the cards on each short end with your fingers and rest your thumbs in the middle. Arch the cards by bringing your hands towards each other and release them by moving your hands apart.

Once the cards have fallen, square the deck so they are in their original form. You have now learned how to shuffle cards like a pro. According to Carson Ford, you should shuffle seven times or more to achieve a sufficient level of randomness.

      Smooshing Method

If you are looking to achieve a high level of randomness, the smooshing method, also known as the scrambling method or washing the cards, is a good option. While it is not as impressive as the riffle method, it can still get the job done.

All you have to do is place all cards face down and spread them around for about a minute before gathering them in a stack. Any card can end up in any position, which is a great way to shuffle a deck of cards.

Shuffling Cards With a New Deck is Easier

If you are trying to learn how to shuffle cards like a pro, then using a new deck is ideal. You can still shuffle with an old deck of cards, but the newer and firmer the deck, the easier the shuffle.

If you are looking to really wow your friends or family, You’re On Deck allows you to personalize your very own deck of cards. Not only does this make it easier for you to learn how to shuffle cards because it is a brand new deck, but it also adds that special touch to game night.
